Timothy F. Casey
focuses his practice on insurance law matters, including preparing
insurance coverage opinions and litigating declaratory judgment actions.
His litigation experience includes both trial and appellate courts, as well
as arbitration and mediation proceedings. He has handled a broad range of
insurance coverage issues, including environmental, toxic tort, asbestos,
general liability, municipal liability, construction, trucking,
professional liability, automobile, and homeowners coverage matters. He also handles construction law and
complex litigation matters.
Mr. Casey served as a member of the Insurance Law Committee of the State
Bar of Michigan for many years. He is co-author of Trying Environmental
Cases to Win: Bench or Jury?, published both in 76 Mich. B.J. 708
(1997) and 16 Michigan Environmental Law Journal No. 1 (Spring 1997), and Insurance
Issues Arising From Environmental Claims, published in 1992 by the
Michigan Bar Journal. Mr. Casey lectured on "Identifying and
Litigating Coverage Issues" for the Institute of Continuing Legal
Education course on insurance law. He also has given
seminar presentations on "Toxic Torts - Liability and Coverage
Issues" and "Assessing Coverage, Triggers, Duty to Defend
in Lead-Related Claims".
Mr. Casey is admitted to practice before all Michigan and Washington state courts, the
United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, and the United
States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He also practices pro hac
vice in other state courts. He is a member of the State Bar of
Michigan, including the Negligence, Environmental Law, Litigation, and Real
Property sections; the Oakland County Bar Association; the Defense Research
Institute; and the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel.
Mr. Casey received his undergraduate degree in Economics and Government in
1977 from the University of Notre Dame, where he also earned membership in
Omicron Delta Epsilon, the Honor Society in Economics. Mr. Casey attended
St. Louis University School of Law where he was a member of the St.
Louis University Law Journal from 1978 to 1980. He received his J.D. in
1980 and was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1980.
Mr. Casey served as a Staff Attorney for the Michigan Court of Appeals for
two years, and practiced for many years with a large Michigan insurance defense
firm before joining the firm as a principal in 1994.
Mr. Casey has successfully defeated multi-million dollar claims in trial and
has successfully defended and resolved many high-dollar insurance claims involving
the firm's clients.
